You are probably already in the Christmas mood and all you can think of is what to get for everyone on your list. Me too! However, if you are someone who likes setting new year resolutions and making plans for the new year, you are more likely to achieve your goals according to an Ottawa based business psychologist Nancy Morris, who motivates our team at CPI Interiors. So planning home improvements ahead of time makes them more achievable. The last two years showed us how crucial comfort at home is to our well-being while we spend much more time at home and perhaps even work from home. Moreover, loving your home can directly translate to how comfortable you are at...

Achieving an Elegant yet Informal Dining Room to Enjoy a Good Company

Dining Room Shot

There always comes time in our lives when we need change. It might be a change of career, lifestyle, priorities or our surrounding. When we met with owners of this beautiful dining room they were planning their downsizing. I was thrilled that Anna and Denis were open experimenting with colour and gave me a blessing to design what I thought will suite the couple best. Transition to a more contemporary style was on the radar. We wanted to incorporate some existing pieces and the dining room chandelier, table and large mirror helped to emphasize the character of the room. As part of a designing phase, decorators listen to what the clients want esthetically and functionally and interpret it through the lens of...

Let’s Talk Style

Living room in blue and white

Meeting new people and earning their trust when it comes to decorating, revamping and renovating their homes comes with the responsibility of interpreting their functional needs and esthetic preferences correctly to achieve a stunning end result they will be thrilled about. I always ask about the style we want to achieve. HGTV savvy homeowners can often pinpoint what they want whereas for many others describing a desired look is challenging. As I thought of the topic for this article, the first instinct was to write about different interior design styles and discuss how they differ and what makes them unique. Fitting it all into a compact article is next to impossible. So, we will talk about the most popular decorating style in...

It is a breath of fresh air to see a home with nicely selected finishes! When flooring coordinates with kitchen cabinetry and countertops complement backsplash and you see a cohesive style throughout the home, it feels like a well played symphony. Countless choices of finishing materials make renovating or building a home overwhelming. From structural choices, selection of flooring to decorative details such as coffered ceilings, wainscoting,  or kitchen cabinet handles, all of these choices need to be curated to achieve beautiful and practical results. Today, I would like to talk about hardwood flooring, its history and considerations for homeowners facing the overwhelm of endless choices. When we were building our home, we made a deal that my husband picks the hardwood and...

Contemporary Haven

contemporary haven

Aside from the creative aspect, meeting new people is what I truly love about my job! It is interesting to learn about their lifestyle, needs, wants and vision of their dream home. Translating those into functional spaces that would fit their lifestyle and reflect tastes of the home owners is an exciting and challenging task every time. I met this lovely family after they had settled in in a newly built home and needed some help pulling it all together. Moving into a new home is an exciting stage of life. It is first a temporary discomfort of trying to find things in unpacked boxes, then finding a place for everything and training the muscle memory and learning where everything is in the...

Creating a Retreat for a Family

When we met with the home owners for the first time, they were looking for help to freshen up their beautiful traditional house. They wanted their family room and powder room to reflect their tastes. Creating a comfortable space that the young family can grow into was equally important.   As for many family room gatherings for conversations, board games or watching movies was the main goal of their family room too. We wanted to seat six people comfortably. The alcove above the fireplace presented a decorating challenge. To tie it with a fresh nature inspired theme with lots of cool greys, blues and greens, the alcove was wallpapered and had a texture and some shine to it resembling the sky. A sun...

Colour Trends of 2021

olour Trends of 2021

Colour is a universal language. It can influence mood, create atmosphere, and lift the spirits. Every year Pantone, the company that calls itself “the global authority on colour”, announces the colour of the year. It is a colour forecast for the consumer and we often see how fashion, marketing and design industries are influenced by the predicted colour trends. The Pantone Colour Institute begins global research early in the spring, looking for recurring patterns or colours in daily life situations. The process now takes nearly nine months. Pantone states that the Colour of the Year is actually “…a colour snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.” Beside Pantone...

Joys of the Biggest Holiday of the Year

New Years celebration was the biggest holiday of the year when I was a child. I remember standing on a stool in front of Father Frost, my parents and guests reading a poem by heart about leverets who hung like toys on a tree to deceive the wolf and save their lives. That was a famous long poem that showered me with gifts that night!Although, this year's Christmas will not be celebrated as usual, it is the perfect time to exercise self discipline and make the choice to keep a positive attitude. Let's create positive experiences this season and enjoy every new day with everything it might bring us and be happy! As an interior decorator, I am thrilled for altering...

Moving to a Simpler Life Style

Anne was excited to move to an active life community of like-minded individuals! She was so smart to start planning her downsizing a long time ago. When she contacted me, she was looking for help to determine what will fit into her new home. She wanted to make it inviting and functional. She showed me her favourite throw cushions with an intricate gold and olive green pattern with peacocks. I used them as an inspiration for the entire design concept. Anne was moving into a brand new empty unit. It was an open concept kitchen joined with the living room. Here is a 3D view of it. After creating a floor plan, I determined which of her existing pieces did fit in and what...
