Colour Trends of 2021

olour Trends of 2021

Colour is a universal language. It can influence mood, create atmosphere, and lift the spirits. Every year Pantone, the company that calls itself “the global authority on colour”, announces the colour of the year. It is a colour forecast for the consumer and we often see how fashion, marketing and design industries are influenced by the predicted colour trends. The Pantone Colour Institute begins global research early in the spring, looking for recurring patterns or colours in daily life situations. The process now takes nearly nine months. Pantone states that the Colour of the Year is actually “…a colour snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.” Beside Pantone...

Joys of the Biggest Holiday of the Year

New Years celebration was the biggest holiday of the year when I was a child. I remember standing on a stool in front of Father Frost, my parents and guests reading a poem by heart about leverets who hung like toys on a tree to deceive the wolf and save their lives. That was a famous long poem that showered me with gifts that night!Although, this year's Christmas will not be celebrated as usual, it is the perfect time to exercise self discipline and make the choice to keep a positive attitude. Let's create positive experiences this season and enjoy every new day with everything it might bring us and be happy! As an interior decorator, I am thrilled for altering...

Moving to a Simpler Life Style

Anne was excited to move to an active life community of like-minded individuals! She was so smart to start planning her downsizing a long time ago. When she contacted me, she was looking for help to determine what will fit into her new home. She wanted to make it inviting and functional. She showed me her favourite throw cushions with an intricate gold and olive green pattern with peacocks. I used them as an inspiration for the entire design concept. Anne was moving into a brand new empty unit. It was an open concept kitchen joined with the living room. Here is a 3D view of it. After creating a floor plan, I determined which of her existing pieces did fit in and what...

Can You Design Happiness?

Would it not be nice to design happiness? I mean spaces that would influence how people feel. For many designers, the link between living spaces and people well-being is intuitive. In fact, one of the questing I ask my clients is “How would you like the space to feel?”.A thoughtfully designed personal space sets you at ease, but what it actually looks like varies widely from person to person. Let’s look into how beautiful spaces affect our brains. What is BeautyBeauty may have always been in the eye of the beholder. But where does the concept of beauty originates from? Donald H. Ruggles, author of Beauty, Neuroscience & Architecture: Timeless Patterns and Their Impact on Our Well-Being. “Now, we are realizing that...

The Final Touch

I have always loved rugs. Childhood memories of wool hand tufted Persian rugs in the middle of our family room and of a green one on the wall behind the sofa still make me smile. This might not match your childhood profile, but just to explain, oriental area rugs were a very popular piece of home decor in Kazakhstan back then. I knew very little about area rugs and their construction. I just loved the warmth they illuminated and feeling of safety at home as every happy child. If you have finished decorating your home but still feel like something is missing, add an area rug to instantly tie everything together. Rugs are a staple element of many homes nowadays. Now when I...

Creating Comfort at Home

Yellow Accent Family Room

We all like to be able to come home and feel relaxed and comfortable. A home is supposed to be a sanctuary where you are able to relax and unwind away from the outside world. In reality, many homeowners are not satisfied with how their home looks or functions and often cannot pinpoint why. Traffic flow is the number one hindrance to a successful furniture arrangement. Poorly placed traffic paths and improperly dimensioned pieces generate irritation and create safety hazards. Improving circulation routes in your home will ensure creation of a calming and stress-reducing environment. Observe the regularly traveled traffic paths and look for ways to rearrange your furniture so that you do not hinder open door passages and create pools...

Big Impact

My husband and I bought our first brand new home from a builder in 2015. Both of us were sure that this would be our dream home and we would never move again. The house was a detached home, upgraded according to our taste and backing onto a park-in-the-making, which was a huge commodity in the GTA. Life went on, kids grew older, and our plans for future have changed completely when we decided to move to Ottawa and convinced my parents to move as well. All that said, people go through lifestyle and life cycle changes despite the condition of their home – whether new or old. There will always be things that no longer work for or satisfy an owner. If...
